Spectacular and extremely demanding for the crews, the Coppa Risiatori is an open sea rowing race that takes place in Livorno, usually in the month of June.
Founded in 1978 on the initiative of the Neri family, it is named after the “Risiatori,” the fearless dockworkers remembered for their rescue feats as, braving storms aboard small boats, they tried to secure the right to unload ships entering the port of Livorno.
Even today, the Coppa Risiatori is a race full of strong emotions, enormous effort, commitment, courage, and determination. All together, frenetically, for 35 very long minutes. Not surprisingly, the athletes reach the finish line completely exhausted and overwhelmed by fatigue. 7,600 meters of rowing at full strength in open sea does not spare anyone.
The race starts from the Torre della Meloria, located about 5 kilometers outside the breakwater of the Molo Novo, which marks the entrance to the port of Livorno. After the start, each helmsman can decide the strategy and route to follow. At that point, there are no more buoys, different currents, or particular trajectories. Out there, the 8 ten-oared boats are all on the same level and, since it is a free course, even possible clashes between crews, the spectacular “boardings,” or attempts to hinder opponents are not excluded. The finish line is instead in the waters of the Novi Lena docks, in the heart of Borgo Cappuccini and right in front of the black-and-white boathouse.
Spectators can watch the race by boarding special tugboats or their own boats. The scene on race Sunday is fantastic, with hundreds of boats following the race along the edges of the course, and a large crowd gathered in the finish area, in Darsena Nuova.
