Palio Marinaro
The Palio is the most classic of the Livorno races: it is the trophy that concludes the rowing season, a spectacular sea party that expresses the truest soul of Livorno better than any other event, between history, tradition and spirit of identity.It takes place every year after the Risiatori and the Barontini, in the stretch of sea off the Mascagni Terrace, a spectacular audience that guarantees an exceptional view of the whole competition. It is a challenge to the last row in which sweat and salty water merge, desire to win and healthy competition, enthusiasm and a lot of effort. Eight districts participate in the Palio competing on gozzo boats, ten-oared boats made up of a crew of ten sturdy rowers plus a helmsman who stands out from the rest of the crew due to his position at the stern, the slimmest physique and the role of "conductor", with the task of coordinating, maneuvering, guiding, setting the pace and inciting his team as much as I can. The race lasts approximately ten minutes but the shot that kicks off the challenge is preceded by months and months of hard work, especially for the athletes who, in the previous year, exercised in the cellars - the meeting places of the Nautical Sections - and rowed directly into the sea or along the Fossi, the characteristic water channels that run through some Livorno districts. A lot of effort is repaid by the satisfaction and warmth of the districts which, already a few days before the Palio, display the flags with the colors of the district. A party unique and spectacular that still makes the ancient maritime traditions of the city alive today.
